Someone mentioned to me you dont need GFCI protected breaker on an EV charger if its over 50A. Could someone please educate me on this?

I thought you needed GFCI protection on all EV chargers unless the charger has GFI built in like Tesla's charger.

Thanks!

All chargers have it built in. The requirement for 50 and under is just redundant, a byproduct of another code requirement for outside applications.

I believe the code states that all receptacle outlets 50A or less in a garage must be GFCI protected. It also requires EVSEs rated over 50A to be hardwired.
So no GFCI required over 50A.

Not necessarily redundant. 50A or less will likely be a receptacle outlet, so the GFCI internal to the EVSE won’t help if a person contacts a blade on the plug while plugging/unplugging.
