A client purchased an old motel, they want to turn it into "affordable housing" for the area. There are 3 different sections. 20 units total and 1 house. The units range from very small studios to small 1 bedrooms. There are main distribution panels feeding each section. The wiring is a complete shit show. I mean shit show. There's 50 years plus of rewiring and "Jerry rigging" going on there.
I was under the assumption that an individual sub panel is not required but I think rewiring it with a small sub panel in each unit would help alleviate the nonsensical electrical work. Would it be better to just put in a sub panel in each unit? Has there been any code changes that could help me get the client to agree to installing the sub panel?
