I’m trying to find what Ive heard called “cable trees”. Basically, triangular MC supports (4 or 6 cable variety) with a base that can be screwed to the top of stud walls. An old foreman told me a catalog # of “SMC-4 or 6” from Caddy, but I’ve scoured their catalog and can’t find them.

Any help is appreciated.

Sound like you are describing the Arlington SMC8 brackets.

I've used the ones that are more like bridle rings, eg

Just finished 2 projects using those Caddy MC brackets. Great item for running MC

Unfortunately, the SMC8s don’t fit the bill. It is a similar design, but has a wide base and vertical middle section with those MC support sections and hat looks like an upside down T.

I won’t have a wall surface to attach to until drywall is up, so running on top of the metal stud walls is my only real option.

The SMC8 has a bracket at the top with a screw hole, so in addition to mounting it flat against a wall, you can hang it from an overhead bar or ceiling.

It sounds like you want an upside down version of the SMC8, where you could screw it on top of something going up rather than to the bottom of something going down. Like the top channel of a metal stud wall that doesn't go all the way to the floor above?

Correct. This is a small office area with 12ft stud walls built inside a warehouse with bar joist 30’ up.

I know they exist because I used them on a project a few years ago, but I’m thinking they might be discontinued or something.

If it is a small job your best bet might be to assemble what you need rather than spend more time searching for the perfect part.

For example use simple L brackets like these and mount the normal SMC8s to them:

Or call Arlington and tell them what you want; maybe they can easily set up their equipment for the variant that will work for you (probably a large order)

Third option: Just use the SMC8, but screwing the 'bottom' hole into the side of the top rail, which will probably make a stiff enough connection to support the MC cable cable

Sorry I can't point you to the exact right part.

What I've done in that situation is mount a 1x scab at a drywall joint height to attach my hangers; usually 12'. And then let the drywall hanger notch around it.

On the job I just finished w/ the Caddy MCS100, we had an 11' framed wall and they stopped drywall at 10'-6", and we mounted the hangers to land just over the drywall.

If you had to mount them on top of a wall, you might run all the cable inside the bracket, and then bundle them w/ zip ties at each bracket.
