Nipples....

That is the correct dictionary, but no idea of what it really means
"a pipe coupling consisting of a short piece of threaded tubing"
Based on that there are no RMC or IMC nipples as they are not tubing.
FWIW another definition from same dictionary:

tubing
noun
tub·ing ˈtü-biŋ ˈtyü-
1: material in the form of a tube

RMC or IMC is in form of a tube isn't it?

All EMT is tubing, but not all tubing is EMT.

I guess the real point is that for the application of the NEC, it doesn't make any difference what a nipple is. I don't think there are any rules that the definition of nipple would make a difference.

For the record, it is my opinion that a nipple is any length of conduit or tubing that is less than the standard factory supplied length.

The biggest difference between pipe and tube is their shape. Pipe will always be round however tube can be round, square or rectangular.

definition from same dictionary as above:

tube

noun

ˈtüb
ˈtyüb
1
: any of various usually cylindrical structures or devices: such as
a
: a hollow elongated cylinder
especially : one to convey fluids
b
: a soft tubular container whose contents (such as toothpaste) can be removed by squeezing
c
(1)
: TUNNEL
(2)
British : SUBWAY sense b
d
: the basically cylindrical section between the mouthpiece and bell that is the fundamental part of a wind instrument

With no other set of standards to modify the definition, seems to intend it to be cylindrical
