I do a decent amount of generator installs, (I’m a Generac Authorized Installer) and I pull a lot of meters to make the connections in the main panel.

I want a temporary cover just for safety when working that close to the live busbars.

I found these, but with my luck I’d break one the tabs off in the jaw. 😳

I wondering if anyone has seen like a LOTO cover for a meter, or some type of reusable meter blank.

I tried google for a while, but I’m trying to short circuit a lot of searching if someone here knows of something.

I’m surprised that your not contacting the power company to disconnect/reconnect. So do you carry around the various poco seals with you also?

Different POCOs have different requirements. One of mine is VERY strict and will never let us touch the meter or mast or service conductors without them first disconnecting. Another one prefers that we do it all ourselves then we just have them come out and do a "make perm" where they cut off our service connections and install their own.

I’m surprised that you’re started out by calling them for disco-deco not contacting the power company to disconnect/reconnect. So do you carry around the various poco seals with you also?

I started out calling them for disco/reco years ago and they never got back to me.

I’ve had them show up at one commercial place where I was doing service work, and he just shrugged and handed me a fistful of tags and asked me to retag it when I was done.

Last one I did last month where I actually needed them to disconnect above the meter, he came back to reconnect and didn’t want to hang around to reconnect the meter, so he just handed me another fistful of tags and asked me to reconnect when I’m done.

How many of you have pocos that use the gold band locking the meter in. It requires their special key to remove and they are very protective of keys around here. So I can’t do any work on meters or whole generators without having poco out to remove lock. Also, if the seal is removed they can choose not to remove meter until they’ve analysis to make sure customer is paid up and also internal exam of meter to see if it’s been tampered with. Makes it kind of a pain here.

Those rings were for 'special customers'. Not sure but I believe the today's smart metering would have made those unnecessary.

Are they that busy they can disconnect for you. Around here they come when we call but I see them sleeping in the car a lot lol
You have to schedule an appt here for anything other than an emergency and it’s usually at least 4 weeks out for next appt

Around here Dominion will usually give permission for Licensed Electricians to pull meter. I have a few of the Plastic Blanks that come with the Millbank meter enclosures (every unit comes with one, so the linemen have MANY extras). With that said, I always make sure the load is OFF and use PPE (hot gloves and FR protection) and also a Rauckman Meter Puller.

I was upgrading the service on my own house WITH a permit and had cut the seal (SOP around here with VEPCO). The meter reader must have stopped by the next day while I was out doing other work. Came home and that ring was on there. They did come out and remove it once I called them and complained!

30+ years ago in NJ, I had a new service installed. The company disconnected the old, did the work, and re-connected. Said the power company would be out to make the connections 'permanent,' but also mentioned that the company used the same connectors the power company did, and that the power company probably would just look at them, approve them, and move on. I also got the feeling that the company that did the work also did contract work for the PC, which made things easier. Power company just moved on.
