Afci question

If i tap into an existing circuit in a house and add 2 receptacles on it can i use a single AFCI receptacle to protect both and be code compliant?(assume its an old panel with no available afci breakers)

AFCI recepticles are similar to GFCI recepticles in that they have the ability to either feed through or splice through. Feed though will protect upstream and splice though does not.

210.12(A)(5) makes it sound like the AFCI outlet has to be on the 1st outlet and there mist be metallic wiring method in between. Am i thinking of this the wrong way?

Look at 210.12(E)

So 210.12(A)(5) is just for new construction and when you extend over 6ft you use 210.12(E) removing the need for metallic wiring method? The only catch after that is you have to locate and replace the 1st outlet and replace it with an AFCI receptacle?
