Preferred method of fastening to masonry

TapCons are my standard go-to.

Here in California, everything is solidly grouted, so we have a lot of options. Wedge anchors, pin anchors, TapCons, etc.

I don’t know what I would do if I had to anchor to hollow block. Completely foreign concept to me. Prolly still try a TapCon

My preference would be a machine screw anchor set with a hollow wall setting tool. With the hollow wall setting tool, it doesn't matter if you are putting the anchor in a web, or in the hollow part of the block.

Concrete - Tapcons or drop-in anchors
Cinder block - Hollow wall lead anchors (expensive set tool but worth it)
Sheetrock - 1/4" toggle bolts
Wood - #10 x 1 1/2" pan head screws

New construction around here basement walls are insulated, so I build the two stud section mentioned above with some OSB (also the preferred sheet goods around here...) on the face. Gives room for surface mount panel and wire stapling. Now, if I know that wall will be finished, then I flush mount with no OSB.

On old work no insulation, I use tapcons to mount either 1. the box or 2. the sheet goods to mount the box upon. If water noticed, then space sheet goods off wall so I use other anchors.

Attach 1x3 running boards to the block walls with .22 caliber nails, then screw mount conduit to the running boards.

Charles Ackerman, boy that name takes me back. Used to hang out with him and Robert Bosch back in the day. He was buddies with Werner Von Siemens but they had a falling out at some point, I think it was over something Joseph Eaton said.
