Anyone ever do a fire alarm replacment job? How do you handle the existing system to be removed? Any other things ot be aware of?

You should make sure that you check with the fire official regarding if the old system will need to be in operation throughout the installation of the new system.

The couple I did, we had to keep both systems in full operation until the new one was completed and tested. We could take zones off line while we were working, and had to provide connections between the two systems so at the end of the work day there was an operating fire alarm system that covered the complete building. That way we could use the existing raceways and wiring from the old system for the new system.

Typically, we reuse the existing cable during a system replacement. This saves the customer a lot of money and minimizes the disruptions in their building. The downside is that once you start, you have to put the building on fire watch. That can be expensive, but maybe not as expensive as a parallel replace and gut. Every situation is unique.
