Well pump wiring

I can confirm at my own house, and the few houses I've eyeballed for one reason or another in Maryland, it's UF (usually direct burial, I've not seen pvc) from house to the top of the well casing. From there it enters into the casing cap and is spliced to the twisted no-jacket conductors the OP is talking about.

I've never seen the twisted conductors outside the well casing or bore hole.
The conductors for my well run into the basement in the same type of poly pipe that the water comes through. I had to adapt the poly to Liquidtite with a silly stackup of plumbing and electrical PVC fittings and run it to a j-box on the wall when I bought the house. It was just run loose across the floor to the pressure switch. For that and many other reasons, it's a wonder the house didn't burn down before we bought it.

I’ve seen them do that before too!

And I recently found out the guy who owned our house for 40 years before we bought it was supposedly an electrician!

It brings to mind the old joke: "What do you call the guy who came last in his med school class? Doctor."

It is likely this product:
If so, you will note it is listed for use IN WELL CASINGS
Outside of the casing an approved wiring method is required.
The standard cable for submerged wells around here. Really old installations only have 2 conductors, before a Code revision required the EGC.

Is a disconnecting means required before the pressure switch on a well pump if the branch circuit protection is out of site?
