Core Drilling Tips

I have a handheld core drilling machine. I need to drill a 2 inch hole through an 8 inch wall obviously I’ve done it several times. You start with the bit at an angle on the block wall gradually drill and then straighten it out. I feel like that’s so ineffective does anybody have any tips on make shifting a guide or some sort of mount to the wall without purchasing a very expensive one any thoughts?

We use an SDS max demo hammer and all our core drilling bits have a smaller centering bit in the middle. I do have a guide cut out though specifically for when you are enlarging an existing hole . Just cut out of a piece of wood a hole exactly the size of your hole saw or core drill and attach It to the wall with the cutout exactly where you want the hole. That will keep the bit in place while starting Then you can take it off when you are deep enough that the bit will hold itself in place

Yeah it's true it's not a perfect solution. Only useful where thats not an issue like a commercial type setting

I cannot imagine hand coring a vertical surface with no support. If I did imagine it, it would cost triple.

I would let them know that was the cost to avoid a few itsy bitsy tapcon holes. Their choice.

I bought a cheap coring but from Amazon that has a pilot but. The cup.is only 2 inches deep, so going through an 8" wall required me to beat the donut out a few times.

I just found a steady stance and used my body as a guide.

I do like the wood idea, and I wouldn't even ask about a few tapcon holes. Any hardware store should have a caulk tube of cement filler that you could use to fill the holes when you're done

Yeah ours is only a few inches deep so you have to clear the bit every once in a while but it usually is all broken up inside so easy to clear. The small holes from the drill guide have never been a big enough problem for me to worry about if I can fill them. I just keep the holes to mount close to the hole I'm drilling

I started with a hand held Hilti, the wood template is excellent to hold the bit.
Later my shop got a Hilti with the drill stand, as we did a lot of core drilling. A bit more time to set up, but much easier to apply steady pressure

I use the rack and bolt it to the wall. Core drilling without it does not sound appealing.
