Howe would you enter an existing piece of equipment on grade if running underground conduit to it? Guess you could not enter from bottom but would have to come up on side.

Pad mounted equipment may have 'boxed' area below it for raceways coming up. See if you have room to access that, otherwise, up the side it is.

Since the equipment is existing and digging under it is impracticable it's better to just turn up the conduits on the side as you've suggested.

might work depending on the cover design, see a fair share of pad mount that the cover opening includes the side panel leaving no side access. also all entry points would have to be lower than any live parts.

Which in most cases you just dig under the pad and there is an access window to come up in.
