New customer has a three horse, three phase hydraulic hose crimper, at first he bought a freq drive, but it was too small, and his electrican couldn’t figure out how to set it up, so he bought the Vevor phase converter. They wired the pump according to the Chinese wiring diagram, and couldn’t get it work. To his electricians credit, the Chinese labeled the input L1,L2,L3 and N, which is how he hooked it up. Starter just chattered, motor didn’t run. No wiring diagram. Traced out the wiring, “N” is not the neutral, it is a remote hot switch leg for the controls! Anyhow, got that to working, and was surprised the Vevor converter actually worked well. Anybody used one of those, and has it lasted any length of time? I think he said he $150 for it. I told him to go ahead and order a spare!

Could be that the Chinese system is 50Hz instead of the USA 60Hz system ?

Didn’t check the output frequency, they weren’t ready to put it under load either. They just had #12 thhn coming out from behind the bench temporarily in. They needed an enclosure too for the drive too. It just had open terminals top and bottom. All I was hired to do was to figure out why it didn’t work.

Getting a lot of calls lately for technical screw ups. Today I went and looked at a very large metal lathe, the motor guy decided the starter was bad, but ordered the wrong one, too small and 120 volt coil, so he walked away. Owner ordered another one, but couldn’t figure out how to wire it back in because it was a different size and manufacturer. Wired it back in, wouldn’t work. He said he got the correct 24 volt coil, problem was, the coil was dc, control was ac! So now I have to go back with the correct starter! LOL! The starter he bought was so large you couldn’t put the cover back on.

Sounds like a total cock up........................(

Most of the electricians around here are residential. Getting to be quite a bit of commercial and industrial lately. They still are doing commercial in romex, and since the county doesn’t require fire rated buildings, they still pass inspection. It would be interesting to poke my head above the ceilings of the local movie theaters! They were built before inspections.

Interesting. I do some residential stuff but that's for my own house and a few local residences. My own field is industrial power electronics - paper mills, cement works, petrochem, steel mills etc. I also travelled quite a lot - South Africa, USA, Taiwan, The Orient Express was quite interesting.....

I’ve been out to look at a few Vevor power electronic products, they were all cheap Chinese stuff that is not listed by any acceptable NRTL in the US, so I warn people of that and the possible implications that has for their insurance coverage. I’ve not been impressed with their build quality, ie there are reasons behind their impossibly low prices. But I’m not dealing with residential users, so I’m not sure how much weight those issues carry in that group.

I’ve also learned that Vevor is not a manufacturer, they are basically like a large hardware store chain in China, with their own in-house brand names, like “Kobalt” is to Lowe’s or “Craftsman” was to Sears. It covers everything from hand tools, to garden products, to kitchen ware, to power electronics. So even if the Vevor garbage can seems well made, that has no bearing on the phase converter quality.

While nrtl certification lack and poor quality there, the sheer size and acceptance of Vevor in US market ia powerful counter-justification for the average consumer.
A specific segment of the population, the value proposition overwhelmingly positive
against compromises. The market effectively voting with its wallet accept the trade-off.

I told him to get a backup, it could fail in the middle of a big job, then he is sol until he gets another.
