Does anyone have a an explanation of what listed fittings would be used in Re: exception 1(2). I'm not sure what fitting would be used , perhaps a 2-hole MC connector?

Is this the section you're referencing? I'm guessing that something like below would be permitted as it will maintain the continuity of the sheath. I've never seen a connector specifically designed to comply with that code section.

590.4(G) Splices.
A box, conduit body, or other enclosure, with a cover installed, shall be required for all splices.
Exception No. 1: On construction sites, a box, conduit body, or other enclosure shall not be required for either of the following conditions:
(1) The circuit conductors being spliced are all from nonmetallic multiconductor cord or cable assemblies, provided that the equipment grounding continuity is maintained with or without the box.
(2) The circuit conductors being spliced are all from metal-sheathed cable assemblies terminated in listed fittings that mechanically secure the cable sheath to maintain effective electrical continuity.

That is what I was thinking it might be . I was hoping it would be something that would contain the splice better, I read what the code said but leaving a splice in the open goes against 30 years of work.
As a clarification in my code book the section between f and h is marked "c", typo I guess.

For Article 590 compliant splices a box is not required. Done all of the time with NM cable for temporary lights and power.
