distance between boxes

Hi all,

i do not have my code book at the jobsite today and a question has come up.
the clearance distance around a box rated 480 or less is 3 ft out from the box and a width of 3 ft for small boxes or if its a wide box, the doors must open a full
90 degrees as i understand it. the engineering team wants us to put another box within 18 inches of a breaker box. to me, you cannot work on both boxes at the same time and maintain the required boundary. they must be 3 ft apart.
am i correct in my thinking? if not please clarify the rules for me.

There is no specific rule, but there is also no specific prohibition.

If sharing space was not allowed there would not be the requirement addressing the difference in the depth of adjacent equipment.

Okay the terminology can change the answers. Technically your breaker box is a cabinet with a panelboard.
