Code and outlet bell boxes.

Im mounting single gang metal bell boxes the ones you can buy from home depot. On the exterior walls of the house. They're Nema 3r rated and my understanding is that you need 1/4 of spacing behind the bell boxes. Are there any code exceptions to this rule? Could I just use schedule 40 pvc as a spacer?

The back of the box has adequate bumps; no spacer needed.
