1/0 SER in an LB

Hi guys,

The inspector approved me to install the 1/0 SER in an LB. I was going to use a 2" LB, do you think that is big enough to get it in there? Or should I bump it up to 2 1/2 or 3" I appreciate any and all responses. Thanks!

SE cable requires a minimum of 5X bending radius. That is typically the limiting factor when using an LB. Also the raceway fill cannot exceed 53%.

I doubt that you will be able to comply with the requirements of 338.24 using any standard LB.

So then the marking on the LB or the 6x trade size rule will apply. The 6x is between the conduit entries inside of the LB.

Assuming 3 conductors plus ground, I think you'll find you need a 2" LB to not exceed the max fill markings. Bumping it up will make it easier to pull though.

Stripping the jacket is legit if the individual conductors are marked in their own right, which I find to be the case with SER ... some of the time. Frankly, I see it done a lot with unmarked conductors too.

It does not change anything as far as code rules. The fill marking or the 6x rule for angle pulls apply to that fitting. I would cite the use of that fitting as a violation of 300.18(A).

The inside of lb's are marked with the max awg size that will fit. Its always waaay less than you'd like. The ser sheathing makes it worse.

So when I do the forbidden an sleeve ser through an LB I do 1 or 2 in a 2 inch. 1/0 I think wouldn't fit at all. This Is as a sleeve for a short section so the only violation is the bending radius. My favorite way is to cut an oval and slide a 90 or 45 into the building structure and be completely compliant. That way would work but you'll want to be careful with the cuts and I use white silicone afterwards to clean up the cut. You might be able to make a 22 fiting and have a very clean install and then there's always sill plates but I think those are only for seu not ser. If there's one for ser I'd be happy to order a few.
