Hey anyone ever hear that a carlon blue single switchbox was not rated on a single family res. on the wall seperating the garage to the living area.

A good friend of mine in Long Beach CA whom I had helped him a bit with his remodel was turned down friday on his inpsection. The inspector cited him that the boxes were not fire rated. I looked on th Carlon cite and they say 2h rated.

Anyone ever have this issue

All the carlon plastic boxes that I have used are marked "2hr rated" on or in the box. A quick look on Carlons website shows that zipbox blue boxes are 2 hour fire rated.

I had my friend read me what it says on the back of the box and it says 2-hrwfc stammped in the back

The only thing I can figure is that there is too many boxes in the firewall itself. I told my buddy that 16 ci and I think its 2 foot apart .

The 24" seperation is for boxes that are back to back in the firerated wall. Also check the boxes listing some boxes have a smaller seperation requirement.

Yea but if on the same wall you max at the 16 cu/in right , then there must be a min seperation from that 16 cu in opening ....yes/no?

The 16 square inch max and 100 square inches per 100 square feet of wall applys to steel boxes. Plastic boxes would need to be listed for use and the listing would have the seperation requirements. Typically it is a minimum of 24" of seperation when the boxes are facing oppsite sides of the wall and located within the same cavity.

As Raider said, you have to check the UL data for each mfg, and each box from that mfg. The UL data is not 'one size fits all', even from the same mfg.

Well the carlon says 2hr ,, But I found no doc as to the actual wall construction.
