1 long gang switch box or 2 smaller boxs

I hate more than 4 switches. I would stack a 3 gang over a 4 gang and better yet if you can add another switch it would be more balanced

7 gang for me I personally despise stacked. Sorry Dennis.

Nothing to be sorry about.
Most people in our area would much rather have the stack mainly because it is easier to remember which switch is which. Besides the fact that a 7 gang plate is not standard and must be ordered

I like the look of 7 looks uniformed but like Dennis said remembering all them is a pain. I am going to be using Radio r2 for home, some remembering is not a big deal in my case.

For me, there's no one way.
I try to do best overall for that specific scenario.

However, I'm not at all a fan of some switches being higher or lower than normal.

If 2 separate boxes works better, side-by-side would be my choice.

You can fit a 3-gang and a 4-gang next to each other in a full stud bay with about an inch between

I hate the looks of that. When I see that I scream. LOL seriously. I actually let my customers decide and even with a 5 or 6 gang they would almost always want to stack them especially since there often isn't a full stud space close to the door jamb. I don't like the switches far from the door. Usually there are 2 2x4's and I usually add a nailer to bring it out a bit more for the 3 1/4" colonial trims that we often see.

If you're going to stack install two 4-gang boxes which would be much more aesthetically pleasing.

Perhaps you can make a few pics with different arrangements and ask what they like best.

If the space is already built, hand the customer a 3-g and a 4-g switch plate to hold on a wall.

Can the switches be logically divided into groups by function, and intentionally separated more?

Perhaps one around a corner or in a closet, or one group inside and the other outside a door?

I'd have to see the room and lighting layouts and the switched sets of lights to be more helpful.

I like one box too with an engraved plate.

Roger

holy crap a 6 gang metal box with extension ring $250 holy crap I am stacking them now
You need to find a new supply house if they are charging that. Just checked one of my suppliers online and the base price for box and ring is $35. This is before my salesman applying any additional discounts.
