I am installing some 12 volt lighting inside of a home in california using outdoor mr16 fixtures. I am confused about what type of wiring to use for this application. I have seen people using outdoor 10/2 low voltage cable before, is this acceptable for in wall and ceilings, behind sheetrock? Is there any type of low voltage lighting cable for this application, or am I limited to romex?

Low voltage wiring for lighting cannot be concealed in walls unless you use chapter 3 wiring methods. Also the outdoor underground cable is not rated for indoor use.

A change in the 2005 NEC allows a class II system to be used, but its limited to 100 VA. Otherwise its a chapter 3 wiring method.
