Can anyone shed some light as to why some county jusidictions require permits and licensed contractors to perform outdoor lighting installations and some don't? I have seen charred spots under decks from overdriven staples, I have seen transfomers melted from overload and cabeling melted in dry mulch beds. I am now of the opinion that this stuff can be dangerous if not installed properly and think inspections should be the norm.

I would, except that Maryland and Northern Virginia have counties the just don't enforce licensure for this work. It is being installed by unlicensed "Outdoor Lighting Specialists" and my favorite, the Irrigation Contractors who upsell their sprinkler installations to include Landscape Lighting. We also have Landscape Design and Installation crews that are now doing the work. It pisses me off.

Transformers arn't fused?
If so, why not?

I think all Low voltage lighting transformer have protection.

But a 300 watt 12 volt transformer secondary can be 'fused' at 25 amps. When someone connects 20 amps worth of fixtures to this 25 amp transformer with door bell wire 'cause it's low voltage' bad things happen.

The Contractors Licensing Board in Florida passed a resolution earlier this year calling for this issue to be dealt with.
They are pushing for permits to prevent landscapers from being able to do this type of work.

DIYers should stick to fiber optics powered by 1000W metal halides ;) At least around here most of the stores cut back on hardwired LV lights in favor of those solar ones that put out dick for light.
