Unless you're talking about improperly-terminated neutrals on MWBC's, there's no electrical reason for the neutral side to be any more heated than the hot side.

It could be something as bizarre as the installers being right-handed and the neutral screws being on the left (with the ground in the "residential" position. :D)

Your replacement of a single receptacle is no doubt installed with greater attention than one of 100 being thrown in by the original electrician.

But then, how many years have passed since your replacement, as compared to how old the originally-installed burned-up receptacles have been?

When comparing 15a and 20a receptacles, remember that refers to receptacles of the same grade. Your 20's are no doubt a better grade than the originals.

As for the same contacts being used for 15a and 20a receptacles of a given grade, notice the triple-wipe contacts will accept both horizontal and verticle blades:
