A few years ago we installed a load of Starline Track Busway and all the 120 volt drops were done with quad plates and 1900 boxes with out KOs and a strain relief connector that is were I saw the boxes and when the customer said that is what OSHA wanted and it was a NEC requirment it rang a bell. But still can't find it in the code book.

There is no NEC requiment for no KOs, not now, not a few years ago.

I know OSHA inspectors bring up KOs but you will not find an OSHA rule that mentions them other than 'all unused opening shall be effectively closed'.

Anyway, good luck.

I don't see it but Hubbell is using 110-12a for there sales literature.

Portable Outlet Box
Problem
Problem: Using a box that is not listed for pendant
application. Open knockouts and inadequate strain relief could
potentially harm equipment or personnel.
Solution: Portable outlet boxes provide a safe rugged portable
enclosure which can be used in many different applications.
NEC Information: Article 110.12 - Refers to unused cable
openings in metallic boxes.

It is not directly written in there. The problem is a 1900 box may be compliant when you first put it together, but after a little abuse KO's begin to bend and come loose - then you have unused openings. Typical 1900 box surface or flush mounted doesn't get the abuse it typically will if used on end of a portable cord. KO's coming out is not as likely.

This is not a extension cord but a drop. By the way the Hubbell box is much nicer but about $35.00 each.

I'd be more willing to accept the 1900 box for a drop over an extension cord in most cases, but price is what will make customers balk, especially if they know a 1900 box is only $2.00 or less.
