Does anyone know what year electricity was made available to buildings such as homes, commercial buildings, and industrial buildings? Also in what year was the 1st NEC published? Thanks-Brian.

Re: 1st NEC

Technically the code was formulated in 1895. The NFPA had their first annual meeting in 1897 and that's when edition #1 of the NEC was written. The first significant stuff was written in 1896 and became NFPA rule 13.

Interesting to me is that NEC Electronics which is http://www.nec.com was founded in Japan in 1897.

The NFPA site is http://www.nfpa.org and there is lots of good historical stuff there.

Our own Bennie was on CMP2 for the 1897 book :) Just kidding!

We have to remind ourselves that the NEC is written by the Nation FIRE PROTECTION Association. Fire Protection is where it all started. The National Fire PREVENTION Association would also be appropriate :)

Re: 1st NEC

The first electrical systems in the US were installed by Ben Franklin shortly after the American Revolution. Many of the historic buildings in Philadelphia have the lightning rod and discharge systems still in place and still functional. The post Civil War reconstruction and refocused attention on non-war technology reignited the electrical revolution in the United States. However, it was the 1893 World Columbian Expo. in Chicago that really grabbed the attention of the public to want electrical power. Of the first 65 electrical installations in the US, 23 fires occured within 6 months!

By 1895 there were 5 nationaly recognized electrical codes in the US. In 1896 they collaborate to form the NEC. Technically, the first electrical code in the US was actually written by Ben Franklin. In the 1780's, Franklin published books on the effects of lightning and fire safety and prevention.
