Anyone ever seen this configuration before? The smokes are wired with 14-2.

Hi,
I have seen it. BUT the IRC requires them to be interconnected. So if you use 2 wire, the smokes should be the ones that are wirelessly (radio frequency maybe?) Interconnected...

DrSparks, I see a yellow and a red wire in the yoke to the smoke, along with a white and a black.

To me, this is a four-wire device, which is not a standard interconnected smoke alarm. The make and model of the device will tell a lot more after the instructions are looked up.

Agreed. Also if you look at the romex jacket in the box the one going to the black and white has a piece of tape on it while the second cable appears to have a red sharpie mark. Almost as if to identify "power" and "other"
