Thanks to all for the feed back and I agree with all of you. No metal boxes no trick question, it ain?t Friday, nor anybody?s birthday and I had my vasectomy 30 years ago plus this ain?t my install but another electrician?s solution to a very bad original install where 12-2 was used with the bare ground connected for the grounded conductor and in 2 cases the bare ground was used as ungrounded supply to the other 3-way. There is 9 of these circuits in an estate?s 4 plex . My suggestion is to run wire mold or to fish 12-3 from attic to the switches ( may be difficult).

Well THAT is a different story and I can't come up with an excuse....unless my family was being held hostage and I had to install it to free them. Even then I'd install some extra cable so I could come back and correct it after they were freed.

That's terrible! Any professional knows you should only use the bare wire as a grounded conductor.
