I have a 400a service. the house has 5 sub panels, but none of them is running of off the main panels except a 200a main breaker panel (and is now a sub panel) wich has no over current protection device in the main panel except a 200a main breaker feeding the main panel. Where would I find that in the code book about that and do you think it would creat future problems?

Welcome to the forum.

Not sure I really understand your set up. Do you have a 200 subpanel run off of another 200 amp panel?

lets start from the beginning, is the meter and service disconnect attached to the structure?

It is a feed through panel.

Feed thru or main lug? If there is no main breaker in the first disco, then you are allowed 6 throws of breakers to disconnect the service.

Where are the main breakers?

What I THINK he is saying he has a 200amp main lug panel which is feed from a 200amp breaker in one of the main panels. This main lug panel then feeds the other sub panels. Is this correct? Please break it down.

That's what I am getting after the last post. At first I thought he said no main....

(outside) two 200amp main breaker panels with 400 amp meter

(inside) one 200amp main breaker 30-40 panel ( fed by one of the 200amp outside panels) that use to be the main panel before someone upgraded the service.

It is feeding one of the four other sub-panels.

The third 125amp sub-panel is feeding a 100 amp sub panel in the bacement.

What do you guys think?

I think it is probably fine but it really depends on the calculated load. I can only assume if they are not blowing the 200 amp breakers that the load is fine.

I can install 50 panels from one panel if the load is calculated to be correct for each feeder and panel.

I hear you work in Chapel Hill sometimes.

Sounds ok to me as long as the calculated loads don't exceed your 200 amp panel feeding these sub panels.

Thanks for the replys. I knew about the loads but i just wanted another apinion. I,ve never ran across 5 sub-panels that was ran that way. i would of done it differently, but thats how picky i am.
