This just a intresting survey of what your cost would be for of a 200 AMP Service in your area.
Specs, 30 ft 200 amp cable, 42 Circuit Panel, Meter Box, installed to code.

In Philadelphia we are charging $2,200.00.

What state are you in and what is the rough cost in your area?

we are in the $2500+ range...others are in the $5/amp range...

$5 an amp? Surely you jest! In my hometown there are a few decent sized shops. They keep 25 to 30 people on the payroll at all times, so I assume they know what they are doing, and they charge $10/amp. If I were to go over $10/amp, I would price myself above what they charge, and possibly lose work in the process. That number is good for me. I pay myself a fair wage, install a basic service, and put the rest in the bank. If the customer wants an outside disconnect, or if the panel and meter base are far apart, or any of several other factors, my price increases accordingly.

If i were the cheapest guy in town I'm sure I'd have no problem keeping that many on the payroll.

The guy I apprenticed under once had a large company; then he realized he could employ half the people, charge twice as much, and end up w/ half the headaches. I like that philosophy.

Now if you really want to make some cash, employ double the people at twice the rate, and you should be rolling.

Let's be honest; you have no idea what their business model is. You can only guess what they're doing by the random things you've heard. Let's build Mr. Wizard his own business model; stop worrying about their success and focus on your own. See how less complicated things can be.

The latest multiple-bid prices I've heard for a back-to-back pedestal and 200A service upgrade were $1500-3k in this area. The guy wanted to know if I'd beat the low bid. LMAO. The ground was frozen & I was thinking $4-5k. The last low-bid upgrade I saw had 20 year old reused breakers in it.

At one of those shops, the owner has profited at least $700,000 for his own pocket for the last 17 years. I know this to be true, I know him very well. My assumption is that he knows how to price and make a good profit. Of course, there's more to his profits than just services. I would really like to charge more, have tried charging more, and lost a little work and got the hung up on several times. Went back to the base rate of 10/amp and average 2, sometimes 3 services a week. Not bad for a one-man show. Help me build a business model? I'm all for a little help and guidence!
