Thanks for the technical help (and all the other help you provide):
This photo is the one that started it all. This air-splice was found behind the medicine cabinet. The dangling black and white were to feed the light at the top of the photo.
In the same bathroom, this GFCI screwed to the plaster with no box:
Neutrals with hooks and tape (no box connector either) and no madisons holding the box in the wall.
In the attic - just as I found it (except I added the red wirenut). Yes the black twisted wires are hot and yes that is 7 cables in an octagon box. Needless to say - no cover.
Dishwasher hookup - just the way I found it.
I hope I did it right this time. This is just a small fraction of what I've found. Feel very sorry for the nice young couple that bought this house (and their quality home inspector).
