I have to confirm to my state inspector that a small tractor repair facility we have designed is class 1 (div 2) below 18" and no where else. The facility is designed to repair both gasoline and diesel fuel vehicles. All Adjacent spaces shall maintain positive air pressures required for de-classification (with alarms on HVAC equipment failure).

The issue lies in the way 511.3(A)(6) is written, it seems to say the entire space is a classified location. The verbiage is written in a convoluted manner, saying if gasoline is not transferred then the area is unclassified, implying the opposite - if gasoline is transferred then the entire area is classified.

This is written in a very similar manner as the previous paragraph 511.3(A)(5) Any thoughts?

In absence of a definitive statement to the contrary, this is an incorrect assertion. All it is saying is if you have no transfer you have no classification either except as required specifically by 511.3(B)(2) or (B)(4). If you do have transfer you are moved to 511.3(B)(3), not a general requirement that the entire area be classified ? otherwise there would be no need for Subsection 511.3(B)(3) at all.

Side note: You also may want to Check NFPA 30A. Much of Art 511 is extracted directly from it. However certain elements (such as what ?transfer? actually means in detail) aren?t included in the Article.
