2017 nec. can I use #4 copper for a 100 amp single family service.and 4/0 copper for a 200 amp service. what article please?
 
Use the 83% method. 100 amps x .83= 83 amps, therefore you only need a conductor good for 83 amps. 200 amps = 166 amps
 
Same section as it has always been, but the old table has been removed and the 83% method is what is used now.

If no adjustment factors are necessary (which the old table did not address) then you still end up with same conductor size as you would have using the old table.

BTW the table went away with the 2014 NEC.
