I am reviewing a textbook and I the have the standard issue with the term "Sub Panel", given that is is not in the code book and probably never has been.

I know it is slang term and I use it all the time, however, I want to point the author to the location in code where the term "Secondary Panel" is used.

Also, I cannot find in code where the four wire cable or conductors are to be used for a remote panelboard and the requirement for the separate grounding system for the remote building, as in a separate garage and dwelling installation.

I don't believe that the code calls them anything other than panelboards. I don't recall seeing the term "secondary panel" in the NEC.

While there is a requirement for an EGC to be run to remote panels, whether they are in the same building or not, that does not require four conductors. Metal raceways are EGCs.

You can also look at it based on what is feeding it. Service panel fed by service conductors (article 230). Or feeder panel, also called non-service panel, or sub panel, and falling under article 215 or 225.
