I wouldn't call it a modification, however, (there is always a however in life), read 406.4(D) regarding replacements.
The receptacle may need to be AFCI protected depending on your code cycle.

in my area if you are not installing new wiring, than AFCI is not necessary. Replacing a receptacle of like is no code violation.
