Is it acceptable to run NM-B up through an island cabinet to feed the required receptacle (s) ? I've seen it done that way but have also seen FMC and MC used. Just wondering.....

It is acceptable in our area as long as it is suitably protected from physical damage.

The best bet is to see what the "approver" will accept, call your inspector.

Thanks Pierre. I work in a lot of areas with no AHJ so I must do what I feel is NEC compliant. I agree with your answer.

Someone is the AHJ, there has to be. Read the definition of the AHJ. It may be the building owner, but someone has to be the AHJ, otherwise the NEC will not work. For example all equipment must be "approved". The approver is the AHJ.

One item to note: the physical damage can come from an overloaded drawer, as well. I never thought of that aspect when I strayed from my custom of FMC, and the inspector pointed it out when he corrected me upside the head.

Flexing doesn't take that much longer.

what does your AHJ allow for the disposal? If they allow Romex there it will be allowed under counter in the Island.

If they require the Disposal to be protected then it will be required in the Island.

What about using ENT? Cheap & easy to use.

This particular jobsite is in a town that doesn't have an electrical inspector and doesn't even require electricians to be licensed. The building owner wouldn't even know what the NEC is. I guess I'm the AHJ .

I just put a duplex receptacle in the area under the sink and feed the dishwasher ( if adjacent to the sink ) and disposal with 14/3 pigtail cords.

Here in Indy nmb exposed in the cabinet areas must be protected under article 334.15(B) I use a J box (nmb enter bottom of box)on floor of island cabinet go from nmb to MC secure to back surface of cabinet to receptacle all metal boxes. Disposal and dishwasher cord plug with SJ.
