soooOOooo, i've yet another 'designer' wanting NOT to see counter top outlets , wanting plugmould under the upper cab's

if the counter is 30", and the uppers start @ 54" , there is 24" in between , bit of a chore when most kitchen appliances only come with that much cord to begin with...

help me out here, is this a bona fide code violation , and should i call this designer out for it?

~RJ~

Agreed Yes the max 20” is there due to the 24” SA cord length. I would bring that to the designers attention.

The maximum is 20" tell the designer to redesign so that it's code compliant. Lately I've seen many designs on high end condos that all sorts of violations like this one.

As others have noted it may be a violation if the plugmold is too high above the counter, and you should absolutely bring this to the attention of the designer. It is their job to figure out how to achieve the desired aesthetic while following the relevant codes, and your job as the electrician to point out electrical code violations if the designer missed them.

Don't want to see outlets? Plugmold facing down on the wall behind a molding, possibly with lights facing upward for nice indirect counter lighting.

Countertop recps used to be 18" above counter, an interior designer submitted a change to allow 20", this would allow wiremold on the bottom lip of the upper cabinets.

well there's UC lighting as well Jon. But i digress , why these designers loath the sight of our work (which is art dammit!) , yet would rather see toaster, blender, coffee maker cords run vertically, as well as limit the mobility of a short corded appliance , is just beyond me........guess i'm just that simple minded :) ~RJ~

Hey, if I had my way, there would be a strut channel raceway about 10" above the counter, a receptacle every 8", and multiple parallel runs of surface mount EMT just for the beauty of parallel EMT with concentric radius bends :) :)

Countertops are typically 36”, and upper cabinets typically start at 56”. I’ve seen 38” & 40” countertop height, but never 30”. If they truly have 30”, show them the code.

You might want to point them Legrand Adorne track. It's a bit prettier than just wiremold and gives a lot of utility (recepatcles, lights, tablet/phone holders...
