In relation to [210.52(H)&(I)] and how it would be interpreted for residential situations, the code does not define either by an official definition. By standard definition, a foyer is an entrance hallway or large open area just inside the entrance, often used for reception. With some homes having wider or larger entry areas, at what point does a hall become a foyer when it comes to electrical outlet requirements? Personally, I think the code could be improved by clarifying the meaning of foyer. For example, since they are both a type of hallway, does a hallway turn into a foyer at a certain width? The code currently only tells us that a foyer is an “area” greater than 60 sq.ft. The NEC handbook also mentions in the code commentary that the requirements in the foyer section provide for receptacle outlets in these spaces to accommodate lamps or other utilization equipment.
