Circuits exceeding 277 volts, nominal, to ground and not exceeding 600 volts, nominal, between conductors shall be permitted to supply the following:

(2) Cord-and-plug-connected or permanently connected utilization equipment other than luminaires.

I assume this meant indoor lights cannot be powered from 480V single phase circuits?

Is this from a 480Y/277 volt system? Would a 480 circuit exceed 277 volts to ground?

I agree, It appears to state that luminaires cannot exceed 600v so 480v would be allowed.

480 volts would be allowed if the system were as I mentioned 480Y/277. If you had a corner grounded 480 volt system then the voltage to ground would exceed 277 volts with a voltage between conductors of 480 volts.

Yes, 480Y/277V system, never use 480V-single phase lights for indoor lighting, but curious about the rule...

Cool so there it is.

If you have one system (480Y/277) then there is no restriction if you have the corner grounded 480 volt system then you cannot do it.
