Is an outlet required within 25ft of a furnace located in a dwelling unit basement? The article seems to required it but the explanation in the handbook just mentions outdoor equipment.

I will add that the one required GFCI receptacle in an unfinished basement will satisfy the requirement as long as it's within 25 feet.

Peter i am sure that you did your homework. Could you please tell what section of the NEC requires a receptacle outlet whitin 25ft. of a residential furnace?

210.63 Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Equipment Outlet.

A 125-volt, single-phase, 15- or 20-ampere-rated receptacle outlet shall be installed at an accessible location for the servicing of heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle shall be located on the same level and within 7.5 m (25 ft) of the heating, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. The receptacle outlet shall not be connected to the load side of the equipment disconnecting means.

This commentary may be left over from several code cycles ago where this requirement only applied to equipment outdoors, on rooftops, or attics.
It is clearly required in the application of the
OP.

I will qualify my answer to be: for those areas currently covered by the 2005 edition, 210.63 would be the governing code reference.
