While doing some research I came across this code. Why would a detached garage need a _wall switched receptacle_ for exterior lighting?

Am I reading this wrong? Thanks.

Yes, you are reading it wrong. It is saying a wall switched outlet not receptacles. A box in the ceiling for a light is an outlet just as one on the wall on the ext. of the garage. It is not calling for a switched receptacle.

210.70(A)(2)(b) - does not require a wall-switched receptacle....it requires a wall switch-controlled lighting outlet....in other words...you have to have a switch...on the wall...to control an outdoor light located by the garage door entrance.

This is to provide illumination at the entrance door.

So... an outlet does not = a receptacle. Gotcha! Thanks!

Correct, Here is the definition of outlet in the NEC:

"Outlet. A point on the wiring system at which current is taken to supply utilization equipment."

Here is the definition of lighting outlet:

"Lighting Outlet. An outlet intended for the direct connection of a lampholder or luminaire."

And here is the definition of receptacle outlet:

"Receptacle Outlet. An outlet where one or more receptacles are installed."

Hope this helps.
