I have an attic remodel getting ready to start and I have a question about 210.70(A)(2)?
First: I need a lighting outlet for the stairs, correct. According to 2170(A)(2)(c) I need to control this lighting outlet from a switch at both the bottom and the top of the stairs. Question: ?Can I use some sort of a motion sensor to control this lighting outlet at the bottom of the stairs to get away from running a 3way for this light, using the exception for 210.70(A)(2)(c)??

You can always install two lighting outlets with two single poles.

Norb, even the IRC 303.6 (I assume you are on a 1 or 2 family resi job) allows automatic means to control the stair lighting. If one had a motion/occupancy sensor that would pick up top and bottom of stairs at one location it would meet the intent.

out of curiosity, why do you not want to wire in a 3-way? motion sensors tend to go out while someone is standing over a box and looking at photos, etc. and are more prone to problems than a good old snap switch in a box.

Mainly looking to see if this would be an option. I'm going to try to get the 3way in but if I can't would this thought "fly".

I am sure you can get the three way in. It is just a matter of how far you are willing to go to make it happen.

I'm sure I can as well. Just trying to "Think outside the box".
