Can someone explain the requirement for signage at panelboards as related to 215.12(C)? Is this for more than one system entering a building or would this apply if the building had one system entering it and separately derived systems within it? I'm thinking of an office building with 277/480 service and transformers within the building for 120/208 volt loads.

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

Any building that has more than one voltage system. That would include a transformer inside the building.

See 210.5(C) for similiar requirements for branch circuits.

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

Thanks Ryan, I was somewhat confused because the commentary in the 2005 Handbook used the term "more than one nominal voltage supply to a building". That seems to imply that if the supply to the building where of only one nominal voltage than 215.12(C) wouldn't apply. The reference to 210.5(C) makes it clearer.

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

You're very welcome.

Notice also the difference between (2002) 210.4(D) and (2005) 210.5(C). Not only does it now (2005) apply to all branch circuits, not just multiwire, but it also removes the identification of phase. Now we must simplt identift voltage.

2002:

120/208
Black A
Red B
Blue C
White N

277/480
Brown A
Orange B
Yellow C
Gray N

2005:

120/208
Black A
Black B
Black C
White N

277/480
Red A
Red B
Red C
Gray N

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

I noticed that in the 2005 list you've used white for the 120/208 system and the grey for the 277/480 system. Was this for clarity or are you saying that this is a requirement?

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

This would be from the requirement of 200.6(D).

You could use white for your 277/480 and gray for 120/208 if you would like as well though. :)

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

If the two systems were completely separate from each other could the grounded conductors of both systems be the same color, say white?

Re: 215.12(C)- Signs required?

If an office building was going up, say 40 lights 277V, 20 120V Rec's.

I see it, due to convenience and/or laziness,

277/460
a = Black
b = Black
c = Black
n = White

208/120
a = red
b = red
c = red
n = white

Just don't put the different system's grounded conductors in the same box, pipes, etc...

Twenty less wires to mark....CHEAP...but legal
