If a service has 240v measured at the main disconnect could the 5% voltage drop be applied just to the feeder conductors rather than the overall combined length of feeder and branch circuit? Trying to get a 100-150a service to a detached shop 400'ish away with direct burial aluminum

FPNs aren't code. You can have whatever voltage drop you want. Some items aren't happy with voltage drop, others are. 400 feet is a rather long way. I'd upsize. Don't forget the note in 250.122 in regards to upsizing the equipment ground when upsizing the ungrounded's for voltage drop.
