I am building a Power Point presentation for an upcoming class when I stumble on a much debated phrase. I always do a Notes Page print out as my guide for a presentation and have a problem with an explanation of one of the sections in 220.14. Therefore I come to you and ask for an explanation.

In 220.14 we are told that for general use receptacles and other outlets not used for the lights are to be based on (A) through (L).
AB&C tells us about appliances, ranges, dryers and motors, D&E about lights and lamp holders, F&G about signs and show windows, H&I about receptacles and plug mold and J&K about dwelling, banks and office buildings.

Now for my question, (L) Other outlets not covered in 220.14(A) through (K) shall be calculated based on 180 volt-amperes per outlet.
Could someone give me an example of one of these ?other outlets??

Re: 220.14(L)

Good question. It can't be a receptacle, or it would have been covered in (I), (J), or (K). Therefore, it must be hard wired, and not plug & cord connected. It can't be a light, or it would have been covered in (D) through (G). But since it is hard wired, it has to be for a specific item of equipment. Therefore, it would be covered by (A), (B), (C), or (H).

So we are left with nothing that is not already covered.

My best guess is that it is a simple "catch all," intended to provide a value for that unknown (or as yet uninvented) outlet that they somehow managed to forget to cover in (A) through (K).

Re: 220.14(L)

In the many times that I have covered 220 in the classroom this is the first time that this section has stood out like it has this time. Maybe it is due to the fact that I am building a Power Point presentation that I just noticed it like this.

I have look back through my material I used in 1999 for220-3(b)(11) and in 2002 220.3(B)(11) and couldn?t find where I even cover it then.

Charlie I like your answer and with your permission I shall quote you in my notes.

Re: 220.14(L)

You are welcome to use it however you wish. But do keep in mind that I was just "guessing." In this case, however, I think it is perfectly acceptable for an Instructor to say, "I don't know, and here is why I don't know, and why I suspect that nobody knows."

Re: 220.14(L)

I would think a swimming pool outlet would be covered by (A).

Did anyone notice that (D) now applies to all light fixtures. In the 2002 code, it only applied to recessed fixtures. Thats good, because it didn't make any sense for it to apply only to recessed fixtures.
