220.54 vs. 220.82 electric clothes dryer calculations

Section 220.54 states that a 5000va calculation should be used if the dryer is less than 5000 va. Section 220.82 B allows the nameplate rating ( which may be lower than 5000 va ) to be used in calculating the feeder and service requirements for dwellings. The two references seen to contridict each other, in what situation would one use each? Thanks.

220.54 is part of the "Standard Calculation" method. 220.82 is part of the "Optional Calculation" method. You can't mix the two.
