Is it within code to place wires carrying 24VAC in the same conduit as wires carrying 110 VAC?

If not, what is the reason behind that?

You can do it if:

Your insulation value on the 24AC is rated at least 120V and

You're not mixing class I with a class 2 or 3 circuit.

At least that's how I was taught.

Conductors have to be of the same insulation rating. Check the markings on the wire before you install it. A lot of the low voltage cables are rated ar 300 volts while most of the wiring for 120 volt equipment is rated at 600 volts. If you're installing a fire alarm system and running wire in the same conduit with 120 volt equipment you may end up having problems caused by induction depending on what the 120 vac wire is feeding. Check sections 760.26 and 27
