The instructions show how to connect the unit to a 3 wire supply. Page 11 of the instructions. The ground and neutral are bonded in the unit, not the receptacle.
To me that implies that the unit actually does source current to the neutral, so a connection is needed even if it is just via a shared neutral/EGC.
 
Im going to be honest, Ive never seen a straight 240 volt 60Hz microwave oven.

Years ago, GE Advantium. Cooked with microwaves and high intensity halogen lights. Made elio's pizza come out crispy. Those bad boys were 30A, 240, but did require neutrals. I'd be surprised if this one didn't.
