I have a situation were an AHJ is requiring a Pool Pump (20 Amp 240 V) be protected by a GFCI. I recommended to the owner to have a GFCI Breaker replace the 2 pole 20 Amp breaker ( at service entrance box) controling this ckt. But he does not want to go thru that expense of the breaker change out.

Question:: Is there a GFCI recepticle for 240v ckt protection vs using a GFCI Breaker in the Service Entry Box???

If I remember correctly hard wired 240volt pool pumps do not require GFCI protection.

If the pump is cord and plug connected, the guy has no choice. Install the 2 pole GFI breaker or hard wire the pump. There is no such thing as a 240 volt gfci receptacle yet.

If the pump is already hard wired, tell the inspector to go pound sand.

As Mdshunk said if you hardwire the pump you won't need any GFCI protection. If the inspector insists on it, ask him for a code reference so that you can show him that it's not in the book.

Thanks all for your input....

The Pump is at present Hard wired to a Breaker in the guys SE Panel thru a 2 pole switch that was installed in a waterproof bell box near the pump. So he does have a disconnect method at present right close to the pump..say 6 to 10 feet.

So, is that enough or would the replaceement of the Breaker witha GFCI be an additional protection. ??

Since the pump is 240 volts and hard wired the GFCI protection is not required. Would it make it safer? Maybe it would.

infinity - The 240 volts has nothing to do with it. The key to avoiding GFI protection is specifically hard wiring it. Or getting a huge motor. :D
ALL plug and receptacle connected pump motors, 15 & 20 amp, 125 or 250 volt, require GFCI protection.

You are correct. The 240 volts is not needed to allow the use of a non-GFCI protected circuit. That would be related, as you stated, to the hardwiring of the pump. I referenced the 240 volts because it was part of the original post, but a hard wired 125 volt pump without GFCI protection would be covered by this section also.
