Say you have a led fixture 240 volt do you have to have a contactor if you want to control it from 2 locations or run one hot to light and 3 way the other?

You have to use a contactor.

410.93 Double-Pole Switched Lampholders

Where supplied by the ungrounded conductors of a circuit,
the switching device of lampholders of the switched type shall
simultaneously disconnect both conductors of the circuit.

410.104 Electric-Discharge Lamp Auxiliary Equipment

(B) Switching. Where supplied by the ungrounded con-
ductors of a circuit, the switching device of auxiliary equip-
ment shall simultaneously disconnect all conductors.

Id argue two standard 277 volt 3 way switches will work. From reading the code nothing requires a contactor.

Nothing to do with the voltage, the problem is the switches aren't opening all ungrounded conductors.

You still end up with a live hot in that fixture with the switch off

I know, my point is a LED fixture is not an electric discharge light or a socket holder with an integral switch.

Does a LED fixture always have a lampholder?

I just put two in the entry way of my office that didn't , well depending on what your def of "lampholder" is.

Depend on the inspector I guess and if the job is big enough to save lots of money on contactors.

If this is outside a resi 240 volts between conductors feeding lighting is technically legal.

Does someone make power supplies/LED boards for refitting high bays? I've got a bunch of 400 HID highbays to retrofit. I'd love to put in something like this and trash the whole idea of using edison bases

Is a led considered an electric discharge lamp?

All other traditional electric discharge lamps pass a current through a gas to produce light. Typical fluorescent tubes have one more step and need the phosphor coating on the tube to convert non visible to visible light.

LED is not anything close to that. It may use fluorescent effects to get desired colors, but basic light production is not a current through a gas.

We have installed hundreds of Light Efficient Design lamps...hi bays, street lights wall packs etc. Mostly are mogul base lamps, you bypass the starter and ballast.
