30 year old service that needed a panel upgrade (pictures for another thread). Overhead service. 4/0 Al to top of meter. We needed more length and are changing to 2/0 Al from meter to new 150 amp panel. Same size and brand as old.

#4 cu to within 5' where plastic water service turns to CU or #6? Currently #8 and bonded about mid way into the house.
 
You have a 150 amp service with 4/0 aluminum being the largest service conductor. Table 250.66 is for the largest service entrance conductors, so IMO, you need #4 to the water pipes.
 
I am not sure where you are going with this Mike, but no the op doesn't have to bond the water pipe within 5' if the pipe is not an electrode.

Yes but he still must bond and whether he does it within 5' or not he still uses 250.66. His question is does he base the bond wire on 2/0 alum or 4/0 alum. IMO, 4/0 is the size of the largest service conductor therefore he must use #4 copper or #2 aluminum. Agree or not?

Agreed assuming 250.104(A)(2) does not come into play.

Out of habit I have always, well mostly, bonded a cu water line within the 1st 5'. Don't know if it would have been any easier on this one to bond at any accessible point. My help did the labor. He thought #6, I of course, argured for #4.

Moot point. He cleaned his bifocals off and it was all 2/0 AL. They pulled 6.
