No, you could run a MWBC and connect each single receptacle to a separate line.

Huh ? I mean to feed one receptacle.
If you had an existing spare 20a2p breaker and wanted to use it to supply power to a single20a branch circuit to feed a duplex receptacle using one pole of the breaker I can find no code violation in order to do so. You could even use the other pole to feed an additional circuit. The only issue would be is if you had an event happen of one pole that would cause a trip it would cause the other pole to trip which could be judged as a poor design.

For future reference, a duplex receptacle counts as 2 receptacles.
