3 wire for cables recessed lights

With that said, would a j-box installed at each light be considered integral if it’s there for no purpose other than the lights?
No. Integral means part of, not merely dedicated to.

Picture old recessed cans with the J-box on the frame.

These are the flat wafer style lights. The j-box on them is tiny
I installed some recently with a rather large j-box, can't remember the brand. Couple of things....

Is it a new construction scenario?
There are can trims which look like flat wafers. That j-box could save you.

Are you already under 2020 code? I think statewide enforcement isn't required until next May.

If you have to use wafers, and you're not under 2020 yet, the j-box behind the light with a 2-wire whip would be ok

Difficult to do through a single KO. (I'm guessing NM cable.)
Not easy for sure, but you can get strain reliefs for 1/2" KOs that are listed for 2 14/3 NM cables. For most of these I've seen you don't need the full 6" lead to make the connection (they just plug into Wago-like connections in the box), so the unspliced connector would be less than 12" and only count as one.

But, unless I'm missing something, you'd have to strip the sheath, fold the wires in a hair-pin, pass them through the connector, and cut and strip the wires you are terminating.

And you give up the ability to switch the light to the other switched leg in the future.

You cannot put a junction box above the ceiling adjacent to the fixture. We used to do that if necessary but there was a code change that now prohibits it.
Rob, would you please provide the code reference for this? I wouldn't do this anyway, but I always thought that it was code compliant.

I've done it a lot when wiring finished basements.

Also done it when changing from can lightsrto wafers, and keep the existing wiring in the can j-box, then jump out with a 14/2 for the wafer

We are on the 2020 code here, and the inspector likes to cause hassles anywhere he can. I think I’m going to just say no to these light, put in can style fixture and use a wafer trim that screws into the light socket. I’ll be glad to be done with this particular customer

Yes exactly like that one. Thanks for the advice everyone!

get some RAB trims, can't tell how many times commercial electric products have failed for customers and RAB stands by their products and they work with dimmers more consistently....

Never had one of them fail. They're badge engineered by Globe and a few other places.

I've installed over 60 Halo wafers in my home, they work great with dimmers and not one has failed after more than 3 years. I wouldn't use the Home Cheapo brand either.

I wouldn't use their smart ones but I have used in my house the 4 inch ones made by globe and they've lasted 3 years of medium usage in the stairwell with frequent on and off.

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned can you just take them back and use traditional cans. You should have enough room in those jbox. I
will never use those wafer lights in my home . get some nice quality trim and they add some sex Appel to you ceiling
